A Periodical of Protest. Nos 1-4. 1897. All published.
4 issues bound in publisher's original striking pictorial cloth. This short-lived journal was published as a reacton to Elbert Hubbard's periodical - The Philistine - a periodical of protest containing shock fiction, poetry, fables, biographies & a section on new books. Athough often critical of American Literature many American authors contributed including Ambrose Bierce, Francis & Edgar Saltus, Eugene Field, Joaquin Miller, Mrs Atherton, etc. There are Bookplates on the front & rear paste-downs with the owner's name on the front end paper which is a little cracked along the spine as is the rear end paper. The pages are uncut & darkened where they protrude. Nonetheless the book is in very good condition, internally clean although obviously much read. £350.00

BELGRAVIA . Ed. Elizabeth BRADDON. 1867-1891 . John Maxwell, London . A London Magazine containing serialised novels, light essays, verse, biographies, travel accounts etc. During its early life contributors were anonymous with many of the stories written by the Editor with articles by G A Sala & R Le Fanu.
The magazine was directed at a "genteel, middle-class lady public of an average educational standard." The novels were considered sensationalpr sentimental.
In 1876 the magazine was sold to a publisher who included full plate illustrations
& widened its appeal. Wilkie Collins contributed The Haunted Hotel & the complete serialisation of Heart & Science. Other contributors include Thomas Hardy, Ouida, Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Grant Allen, E W Hornung, S J Weyman, W E Henley, Julie Hawthorne, Andrew Lang, Fergus Hume, J McCarthy, Mrs C Reade, etc.
40 volumes between Feb 1867 (v.1) - Aug 1891(v.75) together with 3 Christmas

BENTLEY'S MISCE LLANY.
Ed. BOZ.
(Charles DICKENS) till 1839 then later by Harrison AINSWORTH.
A Monthly Magazine, profusely illustrated, mainly of original short stories, serialisations & verse, generally light or satiric analyses & critiques of literative & literary figures. Many American writers, including Longfellow, were introduced to an English audience in this miscellany.
v.1-8. 1837-1840. The 1st issue contains Dickens ‘Public Life of Mr Tulrumble': the 2nd begins the serialisation of Oliver Twist . The accompanying Cruickshank plates are all present through with some seriously browned & one with defective margins. However the illustrations themselves are clear & clean. As well as British writers (Thackeray's first work, Ainsworth's Jack Sheppard, etc.) the Miscellany includes American literature. Longfellow is well represented & August 1840 contains, anonymously, Poe's "Fall of The House of Usher" . Illustrators include Cruickshank, Crowquill & Leech. All volumes are stamped ex-library with small rubber stamp.Volumes 1-4 are half calf with marbled boards, and volumes 5-8 are half calf with embossed boards. All, save the 1st volume, are clean & firm. The latter is badly rubbed on the head & foot of spine with front & rear hinges tender. Nevertheless an inexpensive, significant & desirable item. £500.00

A Literary & Artistic source both for the 1890's & known through its association
with all the foremost writers of the eighteen-nineties & its famous black & white illustrations by A Beardsley-art editor & foremost illustrator.
Other contributors include W B Yeats, W Crane, W Sickert, H James, Corvo, R Le Gallienne, R Garnett, A Symons, E Dowson, K Graham, A Symons, J Laverty, M Baring, G Gissing, A Bennett, W Rothenstein , J Buchan, E Gosse, H W Nevinson, F Leighton, L Housman, J S Sargent, M Beerbohm, etc.
Volume XI has pressure creasing on the upper panel's top cover & spine which is rubbed along the head& foot losing the word “the” of the title.
The spine of volume XII is faded with two small tears at its head & a small circular depression towards the centre not affecting either the lettering or the decoration.
Internally both are very good indeed.
A very good set, all firsts with the publisher's advertisements at the rear.
A complete set of these first issues are extremely uncommon. £1,450.00
